What I Am Thankful For + November Race Round-Up

Happy November, Everyone! This time last year I was putting the final touches on my marathon training as I was preparing to run the Richmond Marathon with my crew. Little did we know that the marathon would be so amazing and we would be running the entire race with Bart Yasso. I must say that race still seems surreal to me- even almost a year later.

Since November is always a month we reflect on what we are thankful for I will start out by saying how thankful I am that I found running. It has not only helped me find and foster some of the best friendships I have ever had, but it also has helped me be a better person. It has given me the avenue to meet lots of new people, make lots of new friends and it provides me with an opportunity to be inspired and encouraged each and every day by the entire running community. I love how running can be whatever is that you want to make it: hard, easy, with others, alone or an opportunity to encourage others. Not only an I thankful for running itself, but I am thankful that my family supports me in my running journey. It is awesome to either have them with me in the stroller or next to me, or at home hanging out until I return from my run. I hope that as the years pass by running remains an activity we can all do together.

So to those of you that have run with me, inspired me or encouraged me- thank you as well. I hope that you all have found as much joy and accomplishment in your running as well- if you haven’t, do not forget to enjoy it and have some fun.

Now onto the Race Round-Up. It is no surprise that in a recent Runner’s World article the Turkey Trot has taken over as the most popular racing day in the country (article can be found here). I think that it is great that a day that is based around eating is now paired with running! Our little family usually participates in a 2-mile turkey trot that we walk with neighbors and friends. Along with the Turkey-themed races this month there are other events going on. Check out the November line up of races:

  1. I agree that running and eating go hand-in-hand. Haha! I’m running a 5 miler the weekend before Thanksgiving and I’m so pumped. Looks like you have a fun and full running schedule for November. Good luck!

  2. Hi Ms. Jones. I enjoy reading your race reports and race round-ups. Sounds like a great reflection on what you are thankful for as well as an impressive list of races on the Delmarva Peninsula. If you or any of your readers are interested in a coupla 5Ks later this month towards the southern end of Delmarva, they might like these:

11/18/17 – 9 AM – 2nd Annual Gobble Wobble 5K Fun Run at Great Hope Golf Course in Westover, MD – Somerset County Recreation and Parks is putting this on. I’ve never run it, nor have I been to this particular venue, but I know the few races I have done on golf courses, that golf course races are pretty neat and scenic, and I’m sure this one’s no exception. Here’s a link: http://www.somersetrecandparks.org/store/p77/Gobble_Wobble_Fun_Run_%26_Walk_2017.html

11/18/17 – 9 AM – Annual Turkey Trot Fun Run (possibly ~2.5 miles) at the Former Riverside Shore Cancer Center in Nassawadox, Virginia – From what I’ve heard word-of-mouth, the Northampton County Parks and Recreation Department has been putting this race on for quite some years on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. I’ve yet to run this one, and I’ve heard it’s around 2.5 miles long. Here’s a link to something I found on the Facebook page for Northampton County Parks and Recreation: https://www.facebook.com/NorthamptonCountyParksAndRecreation/photos/a.498459153554410.1073741826.402966386437021/1612978485435799/?type=3&theater

    * As a side-note, the Northampton County Parks and Recreation Department has been hosting the Pete Rowe Memorial Fun Run for the better part of 40 years around the 4th of July in Nassawadox, VA. This is a point-to-point race of ~2.5 miles that starts in the Brownsville Preserve, and ends near the more central part of Nassawadox near Highway 13. I ran this one Summer several years ago and enjoyed the race. The course and distance were pretty neat (though bring bug spray for the first 1+ in the Brownsville Preserve area). If this Turkey Trot is anything like the Pete Rowe Memorial Fun Run, then I’m sure it’ll be a terrific event. Looking at a map, it looks like the Turkey Trot takes place on the west side of Route 13, while the Pete Rowe Memorial Fun Run take place on the east side, so I know that they’re not the same courses.

P.S. That’s cool you said something about the Fenwick Island Turkey Trot; thank you for reminding us about it. The distance for that event seems real unique. I gotta give that one a whirl one of these years.

    Take care and have fun!
