When I was putting together my July Race Round-Up Post, one race that I just knew I had to take part in was the Christmas in July 5k! The race took place on July 3rd in Lewes, Delaware at the American Legion. The course was a very easy out and back that ran along a road that was parallel to Lewes Beach. The Christmas Themed race benefited The Salvation Army and even had a super star runner join in on the fun, Mike Wardian. Some braved the heat and dressed up in their Christmas Attire- we did see an elf and a few other Christmas Sweaters along the course.
It ended up taking me just shy of 40 minutes to complete the 5k. Being just about 29 weeks pregnant at that point and pushing the double stroller, crossing the finish line was an accomplishment for me so it did not really matter what the clock said. It was very hot, humid and sunny that day so that also played into how hard the race was for me. I was lucky enough to get rescued by my friend Kelly during the last 3/4 of a mile. She came and pushed the stroller with Tanner in it and I was able to run with Reagan for the end of the race. Since it was so hot the kids wanted to stay in the stroller for the majority of the race which was fine with me!
This race featured a kiddie k which took place right before the 5k at 8. The kiddie k had the kids run from the start line, down the end of the road and then back to finish their race. The kids were all awarded with a medal AND a stuffed animal cow (the main sponsor was the Lewes Dairy). The medals were left over from the Delaware Marathon and my kids both proudly wore them during my 5k.
The real fun happened after the race! Once we crossed the finish line and cooled down a bit we all walked back over to the American Legion where the post race festivities were taking place. The post race party took place in a large pavilion outside and it felt so great to be in the shade. They also had fans all over the pavilion which kept the air moving underneath. My two running partners made a straight bee-line to the kids goodie bags which had coloring books and other goodies from the Lewes Dairy. They also were handing out balloons which were a big hit.
Underneath the pavilion was completely decorated for Christmas. It was truly amazing to see all the work put into the event and just how in Christmas Spirit the organizers and volunteers really were. Another popular stop for my kids was the face painting table, egg toss game and of course a visit with Santa himself!
The post race food spread was phenomenal! Of course there was Lewes Dairy chocolate milk, milk and egg nog, along with lemonade and water. There was also “Bobbie” subs (Thanksgiving on a sub roll- turkey, cranberry and stuffing), bagels and other fruit items to choose from. They offered beer for those over 21 and even had some local ice cream!
The Jones Crew had a great time at the race and we will absolutely be adding this one to the calendar for next year! Now that I am in my 30th week of pregnancy with only 9 left to go, it is safe to say that this will be my last 5k that I will be running. I do plan to participate in the Run, White and Blue 5k (2016 recap) as a walker but the Christmas in July 5k was a great one to end my pregnant racing with.
