Have you ever run in a race and thought to yourself “Why have I never run that race before?” Well that is EXACTLY what I was asking myself after I finished in the 3rd Run, White & Blue 5k that is put on by Delaware Technical Community College. As I mentioned in a previous post I was given a free entry to help promote the race.
The race was so well organized and really made the event so enjoyable. Race registration and packet pickup took place inside the Student Service Center which also offered a nice clean, inside bathroom to use (always one of my favorite race perks). There was also a lot going on outside before the race. The Pump-and-Run area was filled with people lifting some weights to reduce their 5k time and lots of local sports teams from around the county were warming up for the race. Around 6:00 pm the runners were lined up at the starting line which was a short walk away from where the pre and post race activities were taking place. I was lucky to sneak away with one kid so my cargo was only half of what it usually is and I got to spend some time with my original running buddy.
As myself and over 400 others took off to start the race it was very crowded but as always it quickly thins out. It is always hard starting races with the stroller and I sometimes feel guilty about being in the way but we were moving as fast as we could at the start! The race consisted of two loops with the first loop being a little bit longer. It was a very nice and easy course around the college campus. There were a lot of volunteers around making sure everyone was going the way they should be and helping cheer on the runners.
I was not sure how the race itself was going to go for me. I was SO tired as I only got very minimal sleep the night before (late and long fantasy football draft). Despite how tired I really was the race adrenaline stepped in and I was able to finish in 28:37 which included the single stroller+running buddy and three walk breaks (one being the water stop). I was very happy with this time and knowing that I was 4th in my age group of about 15 other women made me do a little happy dance inside.
Now let me just say that even though I did not place for my age group, myself along with the other 400+ people there were ALL the winners last night. That after party was one for the books. I do not think I have ever seen a line up of post-race refreshments quite like this one! The food line up looked like this: baked chicken, corn on the cob, pasta salad, and other finger foods, pizza (cheese or pepperoni), Mispillion Beer, Kona Snow Cones (which lets the kids put the flavors on themselves), and last but certainly not least: Vanderwende Farms Ice Cream (which is like the BEST stuff EVER)! It was amazing!
After I had a small sampling of all the post-race foods I chatted with Vanessa from She Runs By The Sea Shore and some of the students my from my school that were there and running as well.
The Run, White & Blue 5k will definitely be one that I plan to make an annual tradition and you should too! I have already told many others about it and hope to see it grow even larger next year as it does support a veteran’s scholarship! I would like to thank Del Tech and the race organizers for the race entry!
