Happy Friday – and welcome to another edition of “Hot Mom Check-In”. This week, we were able to catch up with Melody Booker-Wilkins. Melody is an amazing human being! Not only is she an incredibly savvy business woman and very intelligent, she is also one of the most positive women I know. A recent news article described her as a “force of unshakable optimism” – and I couldn’t agree more! In addition to being an eternal optimist, Melody also has the most amazing southern accent – EVER – and a perfect smile to go with it!
Starting out with a little intro- please tell us about your family, job, and community programs you are involved with.
I’m married to the happiest, kindest, most family-oriented and fun man I know – James Wilkins. We have an awesome blended family – three children and four grandchildren. I am very passionate about my career as Sussex County’s Economic Development Director. My mission is to position Sussex County as one of the most competitive and compelling places in the United States for business development while promoting the County’s unparalleled quality of life and key assets such as the Delaware Coastal Airport. I actively serve on two boards: Kent Sussex Industries and Southern Delaware Tourism. I also serve as a Junior Achievement classroom volunteer.
What are your favorite fitness activities?
Vinyasa/Power Yoga and Jogging/Power Walking.
How do you manage to fit in your workouts with your demanding work schedule? Fortunately I have an abundance of energy, I go to bed early and I am a morning person, so I fit my workouts in before heading into the office.
How do you manage to stay so hot? That is, are there any tools such as fitness apps, equipment, etc that you absolutely cannot live without?
First, I wouldn’t say hot. LOL. I will say I manage to stay energized and happy because I ALWAYS focus on the positives in life and I am extremely grateful for all my blessings. Thankfully I have my trusted Precor treadmill to keep me on track when I’m not exercising outside. I also have a variety of yoga videos to complement my yoga classes held at WhYoga in Milford.
Since you have become a mom, what is your proudest fitness accomplishment?
I participated in 5k competitions over the years, but my proudest fitness accomplishment was running some of my fastest races after going through breast cancer surgery and treatment. While everyone’s cancer journey is different, I stayed remarkably calm, content and confident that I was going to thrive. I’m so thankful to be cancer-free and I live every single day to the fullest!
What’s next on your goal list for 2016? Signed up for any races or events? Do you want to try any new fitness activities?
As I’ve happily reached my 50s, I have found that stretching and strength training are musts. Both have been added to my fitness activities. My goal is to increase my workouts, focus more on toning exercises and perhaps participate in a few 5ks this year.
What is your number one piece of fitness advice for moms who want to have a successful career and still have a family?
While I’m an empty nester now, I can speak to the importance of making health and fitness a priority. You literally have to block time in your schedule and stick to it as often as you can. No one is going to focus on you more than YOU! You deserve it!
What 5 items are always in your refrigerator? And what is currently your favorite recipe?
Cheese, eggs, fruit, spinach and full fat half and half (I love my coffee rich and creamy). Oh, did I say wine? J My favorite recipe is sautéed spinach with lots of garlic.
Who is your fitness role model and why?
Jane Fonda. Can you believe she is 78? I worked out to her fitness videos in the 80s. Now that’s a fit lady!
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who is new to working out? Nutrition is key. Keep your body fueled – water, healthy snacks and eat several small meals a day.
I hope you find Melody as inspiring as I do. She beat breast cancer and she has never looked back! I am going to take a page out of her book and live every single day to the fullest.
Have a great Friday and enjoy the upcoming weekend!
