As I mentioned before there are many holiday inspired races right around my neck of the woods. To kick off the holiday race season I ran in the Winterfest of Lights 5k on Sunday night at 5:00 p.m at North Side park in Ocean City, Maryland.
The weather was absolutely perfect for the race-which came to a relief to many as it has been MISERABLE in years passed. I had planned to push both kiddos in the Double for the race since I knew they would enjoy seeing the light display, however I got lucky and only had to push Reagan in the single BOB. We even saw Santa before the race started! Reagan was happy to say Hi to him and tell him he had cute boots- I love that girl!
The race course took the runners through the lights to start, back through a nearby neighborhood and then again through the lights to the finish line. As usual the course was congested at first but me and a few other stroller moms worked our way out of the crowed and eventually it thinned out.
I cannot recall ever running a race that started as the sun was setting and while unique looking back I wish I had brought my knuckle lights or borrowed a head lamp- by the end of the race it was DARK! The festival of lights were beautiful and definitely kept Reagan’s attention while running by them. She even decided to yell “Merry Christmas, Everyone” while running past others. It was so cute and we got many comments back!
This race was a day after the Rehoboth Beach Half and I had intended on just taking it easy and enjoying the run- but something came over me- maybe it was the fully inflated tires on my stroller (they seem to be a little flat-ALWAYS), the cup of coffee I had at 3:30 or simply the holiday spirit that came over me but I was moving! I ended up finishing around 27:00 minutes which I was super happy with considering I started out realllly slow and was pushing the stroller.
This race will absolutely be an annual fixture to my calendar (weather pending of course) as your race entry fee included a long sleeve shirt, hot chocolate, cookies, chip timing AND a ticket to ride on the train through the lights. For the record they also have hands-down the best Santa there as well. If you are in the Ocean City area this holiday season I encourage you go check out the Winterfest of Lights!
Have you ever run a race at twilight or night?
