Happy Valentine’s Day! I was able to kick off my V Day combining my two favorite activities: (1) hanging with my boys and (2) running! Jimmy, Grant, and I headed over to Deltech for the Chocolate Lovers 5k. This is the second year I have run this race – and I loved it just as much as I did last year! Here are the highlights:
Packet pickup is available the night before (Friday 3pm-6pm), so you can leisurely roll out of bed and head straight to the starting line. This option was perfect for me- especially now that I have a baby and trying to get out of the house always takes way longer than it used to. Don’t worry if you can’t pick up your packet the night before, you can always grab it right before the race starting at 9 am. And, for all you late sleepers out there, this race doesn’t start until 10 am!
The cost of this race is $25 up until the week before the race and $30 after and on the day of the event. The money raised by this 5k goes towards scholarships for DelTech students.
Plenty of parking, even if you get there moments before the race starts (guilty as charged).
The race organizers modified the course from last year, making the course into one large loop that ran along West Denny’s Road behind Deltech, out to Scarborough Road, and back to campus. I had hoped to map the course with my RunKeeper app, but I forgot to start it (darn technology).
This race is stroller and kid friendly! There is a Kiddie-k that starts at 9:50 am. This race had runners and walkers at all different paces. You will not feel like you are the only one out there on the course. This is one of the larger 5k’s in the area – so put it on your calendar now for next year!
You can register as a couple for this event. Create your own team and challenge other couples and teams! In addition to the top 3 finishers in 5 year age categories, there are also trophies for the fastest couples.
The BEST part of this race is the after party. Held inside Deltech, there is warm cocoa and all the chocolate goodies you could imagine just steps from the finish line. Everyone receives a tray filled with pretzels, strawberries, bananas, marshmallows, biscotti’s, and rice crispy treats to dip in warm chocolate fondue. There is also brownies, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate cookies… I could go on and on – but you get the idea. If you are like me and have a sweet tooth, then this race is a dream come true. And let’s not forget the ice sculptures!
I ran this race in 27:44. Last year I ran it in 24:28. So I was slower, but that’s ok because I was pushing a stroller and I have to remember that I did have a baby a little over 2 months ago. I was only 18 seconds from 3rd place in my age group! Ugh so close! There’s always next year!
Overall, I would rate this as one of my favorite 5Ks. This family friendly event is well organized and will not disappoint! Trust me! Have I let you down yet?
