Hot Mom Check-In: Kim Wilson

Hot Mom Check- IN logo

You have probably seen our next Hot Mom around Legislative Hall or in the Kent County charity circuit helping to raise awareness for local non-profits through her amazing Gals That Givecharity fundraising dinners.  As a former staff member for Senator Carper and now co-owner of her own lobbying firm, Kim is well known in the Delaware political arena. On top of her demanding job (Legislative Hall hours are CRAZY), she still has time to give back to the community in a big way.

Kim is always on the go!  Jonesin’ for a Run managed to catch up to her to learn just how she juggles all of her activities.

  1. Starting out with a little intro- please tell us about your family, job, and community programs you are involved with.

My family – Husband (Mike) and two daughters, Madelyn (3) and Harper (2). The three of them keep me on my toes.

Job – I am a contract lobbyist at RuggerioWilson& Associates. I love my job. I love the people with whom I work.

Community – I am incredibly passionate about giving back to the community. I am a co-founder of Gals That Give(“GTG”). GTG is a group of women who gather monthly to raise money for Kent County charities. Last year was our inaugural year. We raised $47,381 for Kent County. We are incredibly proud of the work we have done and are looking forward to keeping the momentum going in 2015.

  1. What are your favorite fitness activities?

I crossfit four days a week at Dover Crossfit. I love it. It pushes me to do things I would never do on my own. It also has helped me focus on being better than yesterday. I’ve also recently started hot yoga and really enjoy it.

  1. How do you manage to fit in your workouts with your demanding work schedule?

My schedule is absolutely crazy. I have a husband who works shift work, two toddlers, a business and Gals That Give. The key to success for me is planning. Simply put, I schedule my work outs in when planning my weeks. If I don’t, I won’t get there. Typically, I hit Crossfit in the mornings, during the week. I also try to do yoga once on the weekends.

  1. How do you manage to stay so hot? That is, are there any tools such as fitness apps, equipment, etc that you absolutely cannot live without?

I’m not sure I would label myself as hot. More often than not, I joke that I’m a hot mess! One of the best tools for me has been accountability partners. I have a few of them. I bounce work out ideas and frustrations off of them, share my food intake for the day, share recipes and we push each other to be better (or, at the very least, survive the work out at hand).

In terms of apps, I like to use myfitnesspal to track my protein, carb and fat intake. It helps me keep myself balanced. I’m not a big calorie counter, but the pie charts that show protein versus carbs versus fat is helpful for me. I also use WOD hopper, which has work outs for me when I’m traveling. It gives me something quick to do to stay focused. Most notably for me is pinterest. I use it most often for recipes. To keep my schedule, I food plan like a crazy lady! This really keeps me organized and is something I can focus on during down time throughout my day.

In terms of tools, a foam roller and lacrosse ball have become clutch for me. They help me work through sore and tight muscles/problem areas. I use them before and sometimes after work outs.

  1. Since you have become a mom, what is your proudest fitness accomplishment?

When I started Crossfit, my youngest was 5 weeks old. I was terrified! Thanks to a friend, I jumped right in and haven’t looked back. It’s not easy, but I show up four days a week and give it my best. Over the past two and half years I have become the fittest I’ve ever been in my life. I’ve challenged myself to do things I never thought I could do — climb 15 foot ropes, back squat 210 lbs, press 115 lbs overhead, double unders, pull ups, and deadlift 215 lbs, to name a few.

While I’m really proud of my accomplishments in the gym, I’m even prouder of the example I’m setting for our girls. Body image and healthy lifestyles are things most females struggle with at some point in their lives, myself included. I’m hopeful that I’m teaching them, by example, what a healthy lifestyle is about (as opposed to a number on the scale).

  1. What’s next on your goal list for 2015? Signed up for any races or events?

I have set a couple goals. First, I’d like to continue to doing hot yoga classes. I really enjoy them and find it helpful with my mobility. Second, I would like to work towards stringing together my double unders. Last, but not least, I want to run a 5k this year. Believe it or not, I have never run one! I often run interval distances during work outs, but never a consecutive 5k. Truth is, I am not a fan of running. It’s not something that comes easy to me, so I would like to work at it.

While I don’t consider myself to be “the most fit person” –  I just show up, which I think is half the battle.

As you can see, Kim is quite an inspiration for all of us.  She is a small business owner with 2 small kids, who also happens to run an amazing charity – all while getting  her early morning sweat on at Dover Crossfit.  Her “Beast Mode” is turned on 24/7!   Please make sure to check out the Gals That Givefacebook page and attend one of their monthly dinners.  All the proceeds go directly to local non-profits.  You will have an amazing time, we promise!

Thanks for taking the time for this interview, Kim. And good luck with your 5K.  We are sure you will dominate that 5k just like you are dominating life!
